Interested in classic films? Like to see them on the big screen? The UCLA Film & Television Archive holds screenings at the Billy Wilder Theater inside the Hammer Museum in Westwood. Admission is free for UCLA students! Check out the schedule here www.cinema.ucla.edu.

Join the SLA student group for an exciting tour of the KCRW music library!  KCRW is a public radio station and “a recognized tastemaker for new music from around the world.”  The KCRW music library houses an extensive collection of music culture in the form of vinyl records, cds, and digital tracks.   Recent projects include the digitization of the library’s vinyl records (50k+), the creation of a database system for instant digital track playback, and evolving plans for offsite (archival) storage.

Free Museum Admission Days

Hope everyone had an amazing winter break, and that gearing up for winter term isn’t causing too much undue stress! One great way to ease back into the quarter is a visit to a local museum – and even better if that visit is free.

Thanks to Shannon, we have a beautifully compiled table listing a number of local museums and which days they offer free admission. Great for visiting for fun, and also an easy and inexpensive ways to start looking around for an internship or other work opportunity.

The museums are listed down the left, and the days/weeks of the month running along the top. The yellow squares blocked in are dates of free admission. For example:

• Autry National Center offers free admission the second Tuesday of each month.
• The Getty Center has free admission all the time.
• The Hammer Museum has free admission every Thursday.

(For students: Even if these don’t work well with your schedule, remember to check the museum website or call them up to see if you can get a student discount – many offer reduced rates to students who bring in photo ID.)

Jumpstart the Winter Quarter with SLA and the Academy Archives Tour!

The tour is the first week of Winter Quarter, Thursday, January 12th, 2012 at 2pm.  The Archive is located at Academy’s Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study, 1313 Vine Street, Los Angeles, California 90028.

The William Andrews Clark Memorial Library is one of UCLA’s major libraries for rare books and manuscripts, with particular strengths in English literature and history (1641-1800), Oscar Wilde, and fine printing. It is located thirteen miles east of campus (about a half-hour drive), in the West Adams District of Los Angeles north of USC. It is administered by UCLA’s Center for Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century Studies.

There are two free (!) parking lots for guests.

Are you interested in sports? The tour of LA84′s library will be perfect for you! The director is going to give us a presentation of what they do, as well as a tour of the library and archive. This is a great opportunity to learn more about digital libraries and working in a niche area.

Mission: Life Ready Through Sport

The LA84 Foundation is endowed with surplus funds from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Our mission is to serve youth through sport and to increase knowledge of sport and its impact on people’s lives. The LA84 Foundation supports a wide array of youth sports programming. We award grants to youth sports organizations within the eight southernmost counties of California. We also conduct our own youth sports and coaching education programs, a number of which have become models for similar programs nationwide.

The LA84 Foundation operates the largest sports research library in North America, the Paul Ziffren Sports Resource Center. It is a state-of-the-art research facility and learning center dedicated to the advancement of sports knowledge and scholarship. The Foundation also maintains a sizable collection of historic sport art and artifacts much of which was inherited from the former Helms Athletic Foundation Sports Halls of Fame.

The LA84 Foundation is a private nonprofit institution. The Foundation has committed more than $197 million to accomplish its mission since 1985. To date, more than two million boys and girls, and more than 1,000 youth sports organizations throughout Southern California have benefited from the endowment. There is no entry fee and each team is allowed 1-5 members to compete for the various prizes.

Pop Quiz Team Trivia is a combination of a traditional English pub quiz with an American game show. The format is designed to entertain and keep the competition tight .The questions are a mix of academia and pop culture, old and new. The questions spark new conversation for old friends and if you are trying to get to know new people, let the game be the ice-breaker. Music is chosen to accompany the questions, or provide a hint to an answer.

The following Friday, the 11th of November, is a holiday, so come out for a fun event and show off just how smart you are!

SLA Food Tour of Downtown LA a Success!

On October 1st, SLA sponsored a private walking food tour of Downtown Los Angeles, featuring 6 delicious food stops: Masis Mediterranean, Mac & Cheeza, Syrup Desserts, Two Bits, Big Man Bakes and Sarita’s Pupuseria. We sampled some of LA’s greatest food, learned about the history of downtown LA and made some new friends within the IS department!

Tour of the Mayme Clayton Museum

Come join the UCLA SLA Student Chapter for a Saturday visit to the Mayme Clayton Museum in Culver City.

The Clayton Collection is the largest and most academically substantial independently held assemblage of its kind in the world. It is second in size and scholarly scope to the renowned Schomburg Collection in the New York City Public Library.

The tour will start at 10:30am on Saturday, November 5, 2011 and last about 90 minutes. This very special tour is limited to 25 people, so get your RSVP in early, no later than October 28, 2011, to assure your spot on the tour.
